When I work with a client, I bring my whole flawed, far-from-perfect self to the relationship and I expect them to do the same. Otherwise, we simply can’t do the kind of deep, honest, and valuable work that results in true change.
This often comes as a surprise to clients, many of whom show up for their initial consultations expecting to quickly address and resolve leadership, communication, and office productivity issues.
This is all very important stuff but none of it begins and ends at work.
Nothing Is Out of Scope
During a recent session, one of my newer clients mentioned that he hadn’t been sleeping. Then he apologized for bringing that up and said, “I guess that sort of thing is out of scope.” I explained to him that nothing is out of scope and we began to dig a little deeper.
By the end of our session, he revealed that the lack of sleep was causing all sorts of issues at home and he was finally able to see that his work was suffering as a direct result.
We may think we have the ability to compartmentalize the different areas of our lives but if you’re experiencing issues in your personal life and you don’t resolve those issues, they are going to impact how you show up at work.
The Personal IS the Professional
In my last post, Conquering the Fear of What Comes Next, I described Martha Beck’s theory of the essential self. This is your genetic legacy, the “you” you were born to be. Revealing our essential selves means revealing who we really are deep down, beneath the social self façade.
This is extremely scary, especially at work, which is why most people NEVER DO IT.
Here’s the thing though: if you’re constantly pushing down parts of yourself that are integral to who you are, then burn-out, loss of motivation and poor performance are inevitable.
There’s No Turning Back
When my clients finally have their “aha” breakthrough moment and realize that they’ve been ignoring their essential selves, they also realize that there’s no turning back.
This can be absolutely terrifying, but if they’re really courageous it can also be the most exciting moment of their lives.
It’s in this moment that they realize anything is possible. Some of them have asked for that promotion, some have moved across country or started a new business. The changes clients make aren’t always this massive and they don’t have to be.
One of my clients simply began giving her employees personal gifts in acknowledgement of great project outcomes. She’d spent years avoiding making personal connections at work, but she learned that showing her emotions allowed for a much more relatable level of connection with her team and had immensely positive effects on their productivity.
