Resolve to Reflect in the New Year – January 7, 2019

If you’re like most of my clients, you’ve been preparing for Q1 2019 since early September. You’ve spent months worrying about budgets, strategic priorities, and the needs of your clients and customers. But have you given any thought to your own needs or those of your team?
Have you taken time to reflect on what you learned in 2018 or what you’d like to create in the new year? Are there critical relationships in your life – either at work or at home – that you know require your attention? If so, how will you show up differently? Taking some time to consider these questions now will guide you towards a clear vision for yourself and your team in the new year.
Reflect Now, Save Time and Energy Later
Time and again, I see leaders avoid getting “internal” about their experiences at work. When your head is buried in numbers, and you’re glued to your phone or drowning in unread emails, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and hard to see the value in pausing to reflect on what’s working and what’s not.
But when you don’t take the time to assess important people issues, you end up disconnected and out of alignment. And your team ends up disconnected from you and from the priorities that you’ve set for the year. Instead of letting unclear expectations, unresolved conflicts and other types of unfinished business linger in the workplace, take a moment to address these challenges before they become significant problems, or provide your employees with the tools they need to tackle them on their own.
Employees Leave Bosses, Not Organizations
Your employees want to know that you’re thinking about more than just operational details and strategic plans. They need to see that you’re considering their daily conflicts and challenges from a “people perspective.”
They also want to see that you’re paying attention to your own growth and development. If you’re not, your best team members are going to go out and find a boss who is. So, show your people that you care and they’ll stay connected to the bottom-line priorities that you’ve set for the year.
