After a tumultuous year, how could any of us forget that even though schools and businesses are generally open again, and travel for the holidays is anticipated to be nearly at pre-pandemic levels, we are still in the middle of a global pandemic?

As the world tentatively opens again, many of us are noticing that we are not the same people we once were. Sometimes our interactions with others feel awkward, almost as if we forgot how to be in the company of others. Sometimes we are bursting with gratitude and overcome with appreciation for all that we do have in this world. Some may experience anxiety, overwhelm, frustration, or anger…  and all these emotions are valid.

Whatever your current experience, taking time to reflect on where you’ve been and where you are will undoubtedly open up a new perspective to planning your next year.

Here are some reflective questions to get you started.

  • What feels unfinished or incomplete? Set a date to get it done.

  • What wins or successes did you have in 2021?

  • What losses or disappointments did you experience in 2021?

  • What got in the way of your success?

  • What lessons did you learn that you want to carry into 2022?

  • How are you different than you were one year ago? What do you want to do differently as a result?

  • What energized you this year? What drained you?

  • How kind were you to yourself? In what instances did you treat yourself well, or where could you have done better?

  • What was the best decision you made?

  • What advice would you give your December 2020 self? Your December 2021 self?

Spend time with these questions and answers. Journal on them. If a clear answer doesn’t bubble up, just write down the questions and go for a walk or do a house project. When you come back to it later, you may have clarity — your subconscious brain is always at work even though you are unaware of it.  Notice where you now feel complete or where you have more reflection to do.

Have a wonderful holiday season! I look forward to connecting with you in 2022.
